Quetiapine is an atypical (second-generation) antipsychotic taken by mouth. The US Seroquel label lists schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, bipolar I manic episodes in adults and in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17, bipolar depression in adults, and adjunct maintenance in bipolar I. The UK SmPC lists schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic episodes, major depressive episodes and prevention of recurrence). The US label shows 25, 50, 100, 200, 300 and 400 mg tablets; the UK SmPC covers 25, 100, 200 and 300 mg film-coated tablets; the EMA referral records 25, 100, 150, 200 and 300 mg across EU member states. Seroquel XR is a separate prolonged-release tablet (50, 150, 200, 300 and 400 mg in the EMA record). Quetiapine is a tablet product with no injection, device or reconstitution step.

What the dispensing pharmacist checks on quetiapine.
Quetiapine is dosed by indication, and the schedules differ. In the US label, adult schizophrenia starts at 25 mg twice daily with a recommended range of 150 to 750 mg a day, while bipolar depression starts at 50 mg once daily at bedtime and reaches 300 mg a day over days 2 to 4. That is why a 25 mg tablet matters at initiation and higher strengths carry the maintenance volume. The US label advises a lower starting dose and slower titration in elderly patients, and a 25 mg a day start in hepatic impairment. Interactions with CYP3A4 are the main procurement-side catch: the UK SmPC contraindicates CYP3A4 inhibitors such as azole antifungals, clarithromycin and HIV protease inhibitors, and the US label reduces the dose to one sixth with ketoconazole and other strong inhibitors. The US label carries boxed warnings for increased mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis and for suicidal thoughts and behaviour in children, adolescents and young adults. Storage is ambient: not above 30 C in the UK SmPC, 25 C with excursions to 15 to 30 C in the US label. No cold chain.
